Greece...
Greece is a country located in the south of the Balkan peninsula, and consists of a mainland part, a peninsula and more than 9800 islands.
Spoken by nearly 22 million people, Greek is a Hellenic language.
There are several variants in this language :
- demotic, which is officially spoken in Greece and Cyprus (modern common Greek)
- the catharevousa (the modern purist Greek)
- acolouthic (the liturgical Greek)
but there are also 3 other dialects: tsakonian, pontic and griko.
Modern Greek is mainly spoken in Greece and Cyprus, but also by a minority of people in Turkey and Albania for example (among others)
The Greek language uses the oldest alphabet in the world. It is a bicameral alphabet of 24 letters (i. e. it consists of upper and lower case letters)
