Know more about sites for photo printing

Want to print your photos? Here are some valuable tips to achieve a great result that matches your expectations!

Before launching yourself in the search for the best price, a preliminary work on your photos will prove necessary to ensure the quality of the prints you receive.

How do you know which size are taken by your camera?

Your photos come from a standard / non-professional digital camera or a smartphone

Please be aware that most of these cameras have a sensor size of 4:3.

If you are concerned by this first case, it is highly recommended to choose a development of 11x15 cm (or the same ratio) to have an optimal photo rendering (keeping the same homothety if you want to make an enlargement of some shots by example)

Your photos come from a high-end/professional camera

In this second case, the size of the sensor is 3:2. You will therefore have to choose a printing format of 10x15 cm for example.

If you do not ask this question previously: you may be unlucky to receive your photos with white margins or cropped, unless the site warns you while downloading your photos, in which case you can do a manual edit and crop or change print format.

Otherwise, trimming or adding white stripes will be done automatically, without notifying you: so be carefull and do study the thing beforehand!

Determine the appropriate print format for your photos

If you want to be sure of the format to print your photos, a simple calculation will allow you to remove any doubts:

Take the size of your image.
Divide the larger number by the smaller one and you will get the ratio of the sides.
The result will be between 1 and 1.778.

Then, please refer to the table below to know which format to be choosen:

Size Ratio Compatible size of print
4/3 format 1,3333 10x13 cm, 11x15 cm, 13x17 cm,
15x20 cm, 20x27 cm
3/2 format 1,5 9x13 cm, 10x15 cm, 13x18 cm,
15x21 cm, 20x30 cm
Square format 1,0 13x13 cm, 20x20 cm
16/9 format 1,778 15x27 cm

Here is a concrete example :

This photo is 960x640 px.

So I calculate 960: 640 = 1.5 (i.e. 3/2 format)

The appropriate sizes, if I want to print this picture, would be 9x13 cm, 10x15 cm, 13x18 cm, 15x21 cm or 20x30 cm (3/2 format)

Helpful information: the dimensions of a photo can be viewed by right-clicking "properties" (on PC) or "reading information / more info" (on MAC)

Pay attention to the resolution!!

Thanks to the previous table, you know now if it is better to print your photos in 4/3 or 2/3 (16/9 and square formats are easily identifiable)

But another important variable has to be taken into account when you want to enlarge your photos for example: the RESOLUTION!

The table below shows you the minimum resolution to be used (in number of pixels), depending on the required print format:

Size Minimum adviced resolution (in pixels)
9x13 960x720
10x13 1280x1024
10x15 1280x1024
11x15 1280x1024
13x17 1600x1200
13x18 1600x1200
15x20 2048x1538
15x21 2048x1538
20x27 2280x1700
20x30 2280x1700

So be careful if the resolution of your photos doesn't reach this minimum: the quality will be poor!

The importance of choosing a good paper...

You may have a picture of good quality: if you don't pay attention to the quality of the paper: you may be dissapointed!

In the table below, you will be able to compare the different types of papers offered by Fujifilm (the latter being one of the main suppliers in the market for printing equipment for photo professionals):

Without falling into extremes like "fine art paper" (used especially by art galleries, photographers or museums), Fuji Crystal Archive Paper Supreme offers a very good alternative as a qualitative paper:

  • suitable for professional use,
  • good thickness (238g / m²),
  • excellent rendering of contrasts and colors and B&W.

This paper has proved its worth and is well known to users: you can go for it!

Warning: in a general way, please do not choose a paper too thick otherwise the grip will not be "very good" and your photos may look a little bit cheap.

To give you a sense, for information purpose:

+/- de 200g/m² :  angry

+/- 235g/m² : smiley

+/-245g/m² : laugh
